A routine visit combines a professional cleaning (removing plaque and tartar that brushing can't), an exam, and periodic X-rays to catch decay and gum problems early. Most dentists recommend a visit every six months, adjusted to your risk level.
What happens at a checkup
A hygienist scales away tartar, polishes your teeth, and reviews your brushing and flossing technique. The dentist then examines teeth, gums, bite, and existing dental work, checks X-rays when due, and screens for oral cancer. If anything needs treatment, you'll get a written plan — you're never obligated to book it that day.
Why the interval matters
Cavities and gum disease progress quietly; both are far cheaper to treat early. Per the CDC, tooth decay is one of the most common chronic conditions in the US, and regular preventive visits are the most reliable way to stay ahead of it.
