Whitening & Veneers
Cosmetic options run from professional whitening (fast, reversible, affordable) to porcelain veneers (dramatic, permanent, and a real financial commitment). The right starting point is almost always the least invasive option that meets your goal.
Whitening realities
In-office whitening lightens teeth several shades in about an hour; custom take-home trays get similar results over two to three weeks. Whitening only works on natural enamel — crowns, veneers, and fillings don't change color, which matters if you have visible dental work. Temporary sensitivity is the main side effect.
Veneers are forever
Porcelain veneers usually require removing a thin layer of enamel, which makes them irreversible — the tooth will always need a veneer or crown afterward. Done well they last 10–15+ years. Ask to see the dentist's own before/after cases, not stock photos, and get the plan in writing including how many units.
What it costs
Commonly quoted national ranges: in-office whitening $300–$800; custom take-home trays $200–$500; porcelain veneers $900–$2,500 per tooth. Prices vary by market and case — always ask for a written, itemized quote. Worried about affording it? See every real way to bring the cost down.
